Be a dreamer. Describe your ideal classroom. How will you interact with your students? What resources do you have? How do they help you be the best teacher you can be?
There are a couple different elements to create my ideal classroom. This first element would be the organization of the room. Student resources and teacher resources would all be in an accessible area in a neat and orderly way. Anything that the students might have to ask me for would be put in a cabinet or drawer that they can access. Next, the classroom would have some empty space. This space would be used for students to be comfortable when reading, working on assignments, group discussions and other projects. My ideal classroom would have lots of students work on the walls and would have plenty of information and emotionally supporting posters. The classroom would be able to quickly change from different themes. Whether the themes are for the season or what we are currently working on in other subjects.
My interactions with my students will be the same as it is now. It will be the combination of teacher modelling, whole group thinking, pair sharing and individual learning. All the while, there will be a careful balancing of playful interactions and serious learning with the students. I like to be able to joke around with my students and have a fun time with them. I have known the majority of my students for a long time so they respect and understand my methods of teaching. We are able to have fun when we can and be serious when it is needed. In an ideal class, my students would be able to approach me about anything, whether it is an issue or something they are happy and looking forward to. I think that when teachers and students have healthy and open interactions, learning is at its best.
In my ideal classroom I would only have the resources that I have the capacity to use. We see it too often that resources and technology are just thrown at you but you don't know how to use the resource. I think that resources such as textbooks, books, supplies, and technology can elevate the learning experience. It also makes things for the teacher a little bit easier. Instead of looking for books and physical evidence we can simply type in a couple of words into a browser and have most of what we need. Technology works to make things easier for its users. We need to be wary that we do not take away from the human essence of the learning experience.
